The average dental insurance annual maximum in 2026 is $1,000 to $2,500. It has barely changed since the 1960s. Adjusted for inflation, a $1,000 cap in 1970 would be over $8,000 today. Instead, you get the same $1,000 to $2,500 — while dental costs have increased by 400 percent.

What that buys you: one crown ($800 to $1,500 after your 50% coinsurance), or one root canal, or two fillings and a cleaning. If you need a dental implant ($4,000 to $6,500), the insurance pays its annual max and you pay the rest — which is most of it. If you need full-arch replacement ($20,000 to $60,000), dental insurance is essentially decorative.

The math on major dental work

ProcedureUS CostInsurance Pays (typical)You Pay
Single implant + crown$4,000–$6,500$1,000–$1,500 (if covered)$3,000–$5,000
4 veneers$4,000–$10,000$0 (cosmetic exclusion)$4,000–$10,000
All-on-4 (per arch)$20,000–$30,000$1,500–$2,500 (max)$17,500–$27,500
Full mouth restoration$40,000–$80,000$1,500–$2,500 (max)$37,500–$77,500

Colombia pricing for the same procedures: $800 to $1,600 per implant, $250 to $500 per veneer, $6,500 to $11,000 per arch for All-on-4. The savings on a single implant case exceed the cost of a round-trip flight and a week's accommodation.

Frequently asked questions

Why hasn't the dental insurance annual max increased?

Dental insurance operates on a different economic model than medical insurance. Plans are priced to cover preventive care (cleanings, X-rays) and contribute partially to basic restorative work. They were never designed to cover major dental reconstruction. The cap stays low because increasing it would require premium increases that employers are unwilling to absorb.

Is dental insurance worth having at all?

For preventive care (two cleanings per year, X-rays, occasional fillings), yes — the premium typically pays for itself. For major work, the annual maximum makes the coverage contribution marginal.
